Dog grooming is more than just a bath and a haircut—it’s a comprehensive process designed to keep your furry friend clean, comfortable, and healthy. Whether you're a first-time pet owner or a seasoned pro, understanding what goes into a grooming session can help set the right expectations for both you and your pup.

How Long Does Grooming Take?

A standard grooming session typically takes one to three hours, depending on factors like:
✔️ Your dog’s size
✔️ Coat type and condition
✔️ The services requested

At Hydrant Pet Center, most grooming sessions last about two hours. However, some breeds with shorter coats or less maintenance needs may take less time, while more detailed grooms, such as intricate trims or de-matting, could extend beyond three hours.

One thing to note—your dog should not be spending all day at the groomer’s. A well-organized salon will ensure an efficient, stress-free experience, getting your pup in and out in a timely manner.

Standard Grooming Services

Every professional grooming session should include a variety of core services. While offerings may vary from salon to salon, a standard groom typically includes:

🛁 Bathing – Cleanses dirt, debris, and excess oils from your dog’s coat.
💨 Blow Drying & Brushing – Helps remove loose fur, tangles, and mats, leaving the coat smooth and shiny.
✂️ Hair Trimming or Haircut – Keeps your dog looking their best, whether it’s a breed-standard cut or a low-maintenance trim.
🐾 Nail Trimming – Prevents overgrowth, which can cause discomfort, affect posture, and even lead to joint issues.
👂 Ear Cleaning – Removes wax and dirt buildup, reducing the risk of infection.

Additional Services for Extra Care

Many grooming salons, including ours, offer add-ons and special treatments to enhance your dog’s care:

🦷 Teeth Brushing – Helps reduce plaque buildup and freshens breath. Good oral hygiene can prevent serious health issues.
🔹 Nail Grinding – Unlike basic clipping, this smooths rough edges and gradually helps shorten the nails over time. This is especially beneficial for dogs with thicker nails or those prone to scratching.
🐕 Anal Gland Expression – Some dogs require their anal glands to be manually expressed, but this should only be done when necessary. Routine expressions are not always recommended, as healthy dogs can naturally express their glands on their own.

The Importance of Nail Care

One of the most overlooked aspects of grooming is nail maintenance. Trimming and grinding your dog’s nails prevents discomfort and keeps them from snagging or splitting.

💡 Did you know? A dog’s nail contains a sensitive area called the quick, which can bleed if cut too short. While groomers take great care to avoid this, accidents can happen—especially with dark nails that make it harder to see the quick. If your dog’s nail ever bleeds at home, applying a paste of baking powder and water with slight pressure for 20 seconds can help stop the bleeding.

A Smooth & Stress-Free Grooming Experience

Grooming should be a positive experience for both you and your pet. By choosing a professional salon with skilled groomers and clear communication, you can ensure your dog receives the care they need without unnecessary stress.
