Flea Season Isn’t Over!

Summer may be winding down, but flea season is still going strong in Northwest Indiana. Fleas thrive during warm weather and can continue living inside a warm home throughout the year.

Once fleas enter your home, they can hide in pet bedding, carpeting, furniture and floor cracks. The fleas you see on your pet may be only a small part of the problem, which is why prevention is much easier than treating an infestation.

Signs of Fleas

Watch for:

  • Frequent scratching, licking or chewing

  • Red or irritated skin

  • Small black specks in the coat

  • Visible fleas moving through the fur

Basic Flea Prevention

  • Use a veterinarian-recommended oral or topical flea preventive.

  • Protect every dog and cat in the household.

  • Give prevention on schedule throughout the year.

  • Choose the correct product for your pet’s species, age and weight.

  • Vacuum regularly and wash pet bedding.

  • Check your pet’s skin and coat for signs of fleas.

What to Do If You Find Fleas

  • Treat every dog and cat in the household with the correct product.

  • Vacuum carpets, furniture and your pet’s favorite areas frequently.

  • Wash any washable items your pet has come into contact with, including bedding, blankets and soft toys.

  • Empty vacuum debris into a sealed bag and place it outside.

  • Continue prevention consistently—it can take time to break the flea life cycle.

Never use a flea product made for dogs on a cat or combine multiple treatments without veterinary guidance.

Regular grooming can help identify fleas, flea dirt and skin irritation, but flea baths and shampoos do not replace consistent prevention.

A little prevention goes a long way toward keeping pets comfortable, healthy and flea-free in every season!
